High Noon - Jenna Selden

I figured that we could race the setting sun before the days got any shorter.

I grabbed your hand and we ran together through twilight, fumbling,

Hoping we could reach the horizon before anything else did.

With the stars on our heels we made it to winter.

We slipped on the ice and I lost your hand

Because the sun didn’t follow us here.

The blank sky hung over us like

A sheet of ice as we slid apart

And we learned that

Sunsets bring

Sunrises.
